Contrary to what some people may think, tobacco is not "done". Smoking is still the leading cause of preventable disease and death in this country. Despite the progress we've made to date, there is still much work to do:

  • Smoking rates have flat lined from 2005 - 2010;
  • In Ontario and Quebec the contraband situation has improved but is still undermining tobacco control efforts;
  • There has been no federal tobacco tax increase since June 2002;
  • Despite being a lethal consumer product that kills half of all long time users when used exactly as intended by the manufacturer, tobacco is still sold everywhere;
  • Tobacco companies are still making record profits; and
  • The Federal Tobacco Control Strategy has been gutted.
