Introduction
The Non-Smokers’ Rights Association/Smoking and Health Action Foundation has developed a searchable database of smoke-free laws across Canada, with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health. This tool will replace NSRA’s Compendium of 100% Smoke-free Municipal Bylaws and the Scan of Bylaws, Ordinances and Legislation with Provisions that Exceed the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.
The new database contains bylaws and laws that exceed one or more provisions of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act. It will be useful to public health staff, community advocates, representatives of NGOs concerned with health issues, municipal and provincial politicians and their staff, municipal lawyers, researchers, the media, and the general public.
Database current to April 30, 2013.
Instructions
There are three ways to access the data:
Simple search
This option allows you to search by province/territory, level of government or name of jurisdiction
(Choose the location from the drop-down menu or type the first few letters of the place you’re looking for). Click on the link in the results to access each full record.
Advanced search
This option allows you to search by a number of additional fields
By using the drop-down menus, you will get a general idea of what has been covered by the legislation or bylaw. Then click on each individual record for more detailed information that includes the definition of smoking used in the legislation or bylaw, a general description of what is covered, contact information and links to the bylaw and related material, where available.
In the near future, we will be adding information on enforcement and providing some analysis.

We at NSRA/SHAF will do our best to keep this database current, but we need your help. If you know of any bylaws not listed that are either new or under development, please let us know by completing as many fields as you can on this form.
